Abaca is used as a material for baskets, trays and lampshades because it is a very versatile and durable material. Abaca is a very strong natural leaf fiber derived from the bark of the banana tree growing in Java, Indonesia. This banana grows particularly rapidly and is therefore a renewable resource. Abaca is waste from banana plantations. To give a second life to old banana leaves, the inhabitants make baskets and lampshades from them.
