Designer vases: how to choose yours
A vase is often the first thing you notice on a table or sideboard. Fresh flowers, branches, dried grasses or no flowers at all: how you use it guides the choice of shape and material.
Getting the proportions right
For a balanced arrangement, the stems above the rim should measure roughly one and a half to two times the height of the vase. A narrow neck holds a few stems or a single sculptural branch; a wide opening suits a generous bouquet. On a dining table, choose a low vase so it doesn't get in the way of conversation.
Glass, ceramic or stoneware?
Mouth-blown glass plays with light and reveals the clarity of the water and stems. Ceramic and stoneware, which Serax develops in collaboration with renowned designers, bring texture and a sculptural presence. Affari of Sweden, Hübsch and Muubs favour organic shapes and mineral tones, while LIND DNA takes a more graphic approach.
Styling several vases together
Group three vases of different heights in the same colour palette or material: the arrangement looks richer than a single piece, even without flowers.
Your questions
Are ceramic vases watertight?
Models glazed on the inside are; for unglazed ceramic, slip a glass tube inside or use it for dried flowers.
How do you clean a glass vase?
A little hot water, white vinegar and a pinch of rice swirled around inside will lift any residue.
