Table lamps: the light that sets the mood
Layering several light sources at different heights is the secret to a warm interior. A table lamp complements the ceiling light or pendant and transforms the atmosphere of a room in the evening.
The right lamp in the right place
On a bedside table, the bottom of the shade should sit at shoulder height when you are sitting up in bed, so you can read without glare. On a console table or sideboard, a taller lamp balances the arrangement. For a desk, choose light directed onto the work surface.
Materials and style
Ceramic and stoneware bases from Serax are sculptural, a decorative piece even when switched off. The natural fibres of Original Home and Affari of Sweden give a warm, diffused glow, while House Doctor and Hübsch work with opal glass, metal and Nordic lines.
Which bulb?
A warm white LED (2 700 K) for the living room and bedroom, a more neutral white (3 000 to 4 000 K) for the study. Check the fitting (E14 or E27) and the maximum wattage shown on each product page.
Your questions
How tall should a bedside lamp be?
Generally 40 to 60 cm, depending on the height of the bedside table and bed: the shade should hide the bulb from where you sit.
Are papier-mâché or natural-fibre lamps safe?
Yes, with an LED bulb, which gives off very little heat, provided you stay within the stated maximum wattage.
