Design rugs: choosing the right size and material
A rug defines a space, warms a floor and softens sound. Too small, it seems to float; well sized, it brings the furniture together.
What size?
In the living room, the front legs of the sofa and armchairs should rest on the rug: generally allow 200 × 300 cm for a large sofa, 160 × 230 cm for a compact living room. Under a dining table, the rug should extend at least 60 cm on each side so the chairs stay on it when pulled back. In a bedroom, it should extend at least 50 cm beyond the bed on each side.
Which material?
Wool is warm, hard-wearing and naturally resists dirt; jute brings natural texture but dislikes damp; cotton is easier to wash. House Doctor, Affari of Sweden and Hübsch offer woven designs in natural tones.
Your questions
How do I care for a wool rug?
Vacuum it regularly without a rotating brush and have it professionally cleaned every two to three years.
Do I need a non-slip underlay?
Yes, on a smooth floor: it stops the rug slipping and protects it from wear.
Pair it with our sofas and coffee tables.
